Dniepropetrovsk National University of Railway Transport is the university with its quite long and rich history. I can tell about the Foreign Language Department the same. But there is no need to speak about the importance of foreign language learning for technical students nowadays, in the era of globalisation, hi-tech technologies and extremely high-speed life style. Nobody can even imagine where he or she will have an opportunity to live and work in several years. And without foreign languages practice it would be an unreal thing. So the skilled tutors of our department work for this purpose doing their best while teaching the students of our university to speak foreign languages well. Because learning a foreign language not only reveals how other societies think and feel, what they have experienced and value, and how they express themselves. It also provides a cultural mirror in which we can more clearly see our own society.
It has already become a tradition that the students of our university take part in the annual international conference “Modern Technologies: Improving the Present and Impacting the Future” presenting their own developed technical projects. This year we have opened “English Movie Club” for all the students who are eager not only to participate in the technical curriculum events but also in extra-curricular ones, which give the opportunity of all-round personal development for our youth. I believe that language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going to. And despite the preparation of future engineers but not interpreters, our professional staff intend both to preparing the young people who will be able to develop the technical level of our country’s railways and the persons who believe that words have genuine substance – mass, weight and specific gravity.
